With that in mind, i want to share with you the DVD series we use the most with our elementary age kids and the ones that they ask for over and over again.
This series from the creator of Veggie Tales introduces the Bible to kids, from Genesis through Revelation. This is not just a surface overview, though. With the help of characters like Buck Denver and the Sunday School lady, kids (and adults!) can learn about the different books of the Bible, Bible and church history, and some theology as well. My kids LOVE these videos and even though we have been through the whole series, we watch them over and over again.
Tried and true, the singing vegetables have won over another generation. True, they take license with some of the biblical details in adaptations like "Josh and the Big Wall" and "Dave and the Giant Pickle", but the biblical principles are there and the characters are lovable.
This series was introduced to us by some good friends. The characters are all cars who have various adventures where they learn lessons about different Christian character traits. Each short episode ends with a catchy music video that hammers home the Biblical principle in a fun and memorable way.
This series is one I grew up with! I have fond memories in the 70s of sitting on our mustard-yellow carpet watching the stories of Davey, his sister Sally, and his dog Goliath learn about how to live for God in their everyday lives. Now it is one of our children's favorites as they learn with Davey about how to trust God, what prayer is, how to get along with people you don't like, and dozens of other life lessons from a Christian perspective. One bonus? The parents are presented not as silly and bumbling, but in a respectful light, as they guide Davey and Sally in the right path. There are twelve volumes, most of which have 6 episodes on them.
We have only a few of these videos right now because they are better for older elementary kids as some of the scenes are intense for little ones. They are excellent introductions to "heroes of the faith", whether missionaries, church leaders, or those who have gone through persecution for their belief in Jesus.
