My Classical Conversations story
I NO LONGER RECOMMEND, ENDORSE, OR IN ANY OTHER WAY ENCOURAGE ANYONE TO ASSOCIATE WITH CLASSICAL CONVERSATIONS, WHETHER AS A CUSTOMER, EMPLOYEE, CONTRACTOR, OR LICENSEE (aka Director)!!! Feel free to contact me for more information!
Like a good many of the blessings in my life, I found Classical Conversations entirely by accident. Our daughter had just turned five and we knew we would be homeschooling her, and eventually her baby brother. I was on the lookout for some kind of program or co-op or something that would provide a social outlet as well as some support for me as a homeschool mom.
I found one program that was a "school for homeschoolers". It met two days a week, with assignments for the other days during the week. We visited and found the atmosphere to be wonderful and loving, and were so close to signing up. But it was some distance from our home, and the idea of dropping my daughter off for "school" two days a week when we wanted to homeschool was bothering me, no matter how wonderful the program was.
Then we heard - and I honestly don't remember how - of another program that was meeting ten minutes from our home. It was also a class for homeschool students, but parents had to come as well, and it was just one morning a week. That was more what I was looking for! We visited and loved it. It was a "classical" program, about which I had zero understanding, but we figured we would learn more at the free "parent practicum" we could attend that summer.
By the time Parent Practicum rolled around, we were not just enrolled, but I had agreed to be a tutor for my daughter's class. That year was truly a crash course in the classical method of learning and Classical Conversations as an organization. I honestly did not know what I was doing a lot of weeks, and I had to unlearn a good many methods and ideas that I had learned in my years of teaching public school, but by the end of the year, I was hooked on CC. In fact, I was so convinced of its value that I had agreed to direct our community the next year.
Three years later, we still love Classical Conversations. This year, my son joined us as well, the one who was a baby when we first found CC. If you would like to learn more, and especially if you are looking for a community in the area of Northeast Columbia, I invite you to see our CCNE Website at www.ccnecolumbia.weebly.com.
