If you have arrived here because of a link shared on Facebook, welcome! In the nature of full disclosure, I am no longer comfortable recommending Classical Conversations as a curriculum, a community, or a company. Feel free to contact me privately for more information.
In my roles as tutor and director, I've heard a lot of parents discussing whether or not they would be joining a CC community the next year. Sometimes the reasons are financial, sometimes related to scheduling conflicts, sometimes just because life throws a lot at us and we feel like we need one less thing on our plates. A lot of those families like the CC curriculum, and so even if they can't be in a community, they plan to use the memory work at home and "do Foundations" there.
I understand that for some families, being in a CC Foundations program is just not feasible - finances are not there, there is no community nearby, the schedule doesn't work, whatever. So this is not meant as a guilt trip or to shame anyone in those situations. But for those families who are just thinking of trying something new, or wanting that one morning a week back, I hope you'll hear me out. Because the CC Foundations program is so much more than just the memory work.
It's a model. (Added: it is NOT the only, or the best, model of classical learning, and I no longer believe the activities during the "community day" are an example of that)
It's a classroom setting.
It's a mentoring program. (This is only true if the leaders are more experienced at using the classical approach in their homeschool. Often, directors and tutors are NOT experienced with the classical model and sometimes are not even experience with homeschooling. I tutored my first year, and was directing by my second.)
It's a community. (But you can absolutely find community elsewhere.)
So if you truly can't do Foundations? I encourage you to look for these things in other places. But if you can, and you're just not sure if signing up is worth it because, hey, you can always do the memory work at home, I really encourage you to reconsider, and to realize what you are getting when you say yes to your local Director - memory work and a whole lot more!
